RoomZoom Visits Greycork

By Taylor Smith

If you’ve ever spent the better part of your Sunday arguing over a dining room set at IKEA only to get home and fail to put it together, you might want to check out Greycork. The Rhode Island-based furniture company founded in 2013 prides itself on those clean designs, enduring materials, and ease of assembly young urbanites seek. And, as RoomZoom witnessed recently, all the pieces in their Felix Family living room set can be assembled, disassembled, and put back together again tool-free and without losing their structural integrity. Sound too good to be true? See for yourself.

The RoomZoom team took over Greycork’s Providence showroom for a day to test out the process, meet the team, and lounge on some impossibly comfy sofas.

Welcome to Greycork

“Walking into the Greycork office was like walking into a chic minimalist designer’s home in midtown. Lots of wood, muted colors, and leafy plants,” Yuri says of our visit. “It probably has something to do with the founders’ art school backgrounds; the furniture design is simple and modest while still managing to look sophisticated.”

The Greycork Team

Greycork’s come a long way from Sunday night Skype sessions between the three founders. Now nine members strong, the young team handled our invasion of their workspace quite graciously.

Greycork launched their stylish living room collection in 2015 with a successful Indiegogo campaign. After moving their upholstery manufacturing from China to the U.S., they’re now on v.2.

Mass Appeal

“When we were in the design research phase we found that grey was the most universally accepted color,” John says of the dominant hue. “Being a new company, wanted to keep market as big as possible.” As for the name Greycork? Per John, “Greycork is a word that had no meaning, so we thought of it as our blank canvas that would come to represent our culture over time.”

Down to Business

Assisted by Molly from the design team, Yuri did the honors of helping disassemble and reassemble John’s personal favorite Greycork offering, the Felix Sofa. “It was a fairly straightforward process that took a matter of minutes, maybe 15 at most. The whole activity was done without any tools at all, which I thought was pretty amazing,” she says. “My hands are not particularly strong (quite the opposite, actually), so if I had no trouble in putting together this massive couch, I’m sure no one else will either.”

Why It Works

Part of what makes the assembly so smooth is the quality of the products, which are built to hold up to multiple assemblies and disassembles. Greycork uses American Ash, Baltic plywood, and powder-coated steel for their durability.

Talented Friends

Company friend Branche Coverdale, an NY-based illustrator and RISD alum, designed this blanket featuring John and his six-year-old golden doodle Tarzan. Though perhaps “his” is too strong. Per John, he’s the office dog and “he has no owner.” Sadly, Tarzan had prior engagements and was out of the office during our visit.
